Cleaning with Purpose: Smart Recycling Tips for Decatur & Macon County
April 2026
As the days get longer and temperatures rise, spring is a popular time to refresh your home—and your habits, including our team at the Sanitary District of Decatur (SDD). But for us, cleaning isn’t just about clearing clutter. It’s about protecting our water, preserving our environment, and keeping our community running efficiently.
SDD plays a critical role in treating wastewater and safeguarding local waterways like Lake Decatur and the Sangamon River. What goes down your drains—or ends up in the trash—directly impacts that mission. So, this spring, we offer a few simple choices to consider that will make a big difference for our sanitary system and waterways.
Start with a Smart Sort
Before tossing items in the trash, take a moment to separate recyclables. Common items like cardboard boxes, paper, aluminum cans, and certain plastics can often be recycled through local programs. Not only does this reduce landfill waste, but it also helps conserve resources and energy.
For larger spring cleanouts, consider donating gently used clothing, furniture, and household goods to local nonprofits. Keeping usable items out of the waste stream supports both the environment and your neighbors.
We’ve been taught to recycle. Now it’s time to learn to recycle correctly. Macon County Department of Environmental Management offers access to a free recycling coach that can be downloaded using this link to the Recycle Coach app.
Be Careful What Goes Down the Drain
One of the biggest challenges a wastewater system faces is improper disposal. During cleaning projects, avoid rinsing or flushing these items:
- Grease, fats, and oils
- Harsh chemicals or cleaning solvents
- Paints or automotive fluids
- “Flushable” wipes (they’re not truly flushable)
These materials can clog pipes, damage infrastructure, and disrupt the treatment process. Instead, dispose of hazardous household waste through approved local collection programs.

Choose Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
Many conventional cleaning products contain chemicals that can be difficult to remove during wastewater treatment or even kill beneficial organisms used to clean the water. When possible, opt for environmentally friendly or biodegradable products. Simple solutions like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon can be highly effective—and much gentler on the system.
Refresh Your Outdoor Spaces Responsibly
Yard work can also impact local water quality. Sweep up grass clippings and leaves rather than washing them into storm drains, where they can contribute to nutrient pollution. If you’re using fertilizers, apply them sparingly and according to guidelines to prevent runoff into nearby waterways.
A Cleaner Home, A Healthier Community
Cleaning is more than a seasonal chore—it’s an opportunity to make choices that benefit the entire Decatur and Macon County community. By recycling thoughtfully, disposing of waste properly, and being mindful of what enters our water system, you’re helping SDD continue its mission of protecting public health and the environment.
This season, let’s clean with intention—and keep Decatur flowing strong.
